What prompts can encourage the stories we need to hear and share in our community?
In this activity, participants will brainstorm and craft story exchange prompts. Taking the time to curate specific prompts helps to reflect communities, their values, and the stories that need to be heard.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to brainstorm story exchange prompts as a collective and feel more prepared to lead story exchanges.
Participants will hone their deep listening skills as they assess strong and relevant prompts for story exchange participants.

- Say: The Narrative 4 story exchange can be especially powerful when prompts come from the participating group—because then the questions reflect that group’s community, its values, and the stories vital to them. Today, we’re going to design prompts together. The prompts we create will guide future story exchanges, helping foster compassionate conversations that give everyone a voice in our community.
Brainstorming Ideas
5 minutes
- First, let’s brainstorm what type of stories we want to draw from our community. This will help us craft unique and specific prompts. Take 5 minutes to jot down your thoughts and ideas on a few sticky notes using the questions below as a guide.
- What’s a type of story you wish you could hear from others?
- What story could help us grow closer in compassion and understanding?
- Say: Now, as a group we are going to post our sticky notes on the wall and begin to pick out themes and patterns. Think community, family, identity, hope etc. Once we have our key themes we can start to think about a few we want to focus on for our first set of story exchanges.
