Connecting older and younger in Connecticut!

Narrative 4 partnered with Borrow My Glasses (BMG) and Mary Wade Center to deliver an intergenerational Story Exchange as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.
Several elders reported not having spoken much in days or even weeks and found the exchange moving and revitalizing.

Held at the Mary Wade assisted living center and as part of the 2025 International Festival of Arts & Ideas, the event invited students of all ages—especially those interested in healthcare, elder care, or community service—to connect with elders through Narrative 4’s signature Story Exchange. The goal? To create a sense of community, shatter generational stereotypes, and create meaningful, human connection.
The program aimed to shattered stereotypes, foster community across generations, and prepared participants to live and work in meaningful connection with people of all ages. The program implemented Narrative 4’s core Story Exchange method, cultivating human connection, active listening, and compassion.
After the Story Exchange, participants reported experiencing profound emotional impact. Both youth and elders reported feeling deep joy, connection, and a sense of being valued. Multiple stories highlighted how participants felt “needed,” “energized,” and “more empathetic toward themselves and others.” Several elders reported not having spoken much in days or even weeks and found the exchange moving and revitalizing.
What began as a one-time event sparked something more lasting. Students are now planning regular visits to the Mary Wade center, affectionately referring to it as their new “Adopt-a-Grandma” program. One participant is attending an elder’s upcoming art exhibit. Others are exploring intergenerational mentorships focused on academics and career growth.
Alfred, an award-winning artist from the Adult Day Center, surprised Aidan (a young participant) with a hand-drawn portrait. That unexpected gift sparked more than just a smile – it launched a friendship across generations.

This event wasn’t just about telling stories. It was about changing how we see one another across age and experience. It’s a beautiful example of how Narrative 4’s Story Exchanges can plant seeds of compassion, connection and community that continue to grow long after the event ends.
