Objectives:

● To build story exchanges into NYU first year medical student curriculum so all students participate in the study of how to listen deeply and overcome implicit bias

● To design research that studies the impact on incoming medical residents.

Programming:
Narrative 4 Story Exchange for First Year Medical Students

To support the NYU Grossman Medical School and the Center for Empathy in Medicine at the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education by supporting the development and implementation of innovative curriculum, including the Narrative 4 Story Exchange, enhancing and supporting empathy throughout the healthcare system and especially in undergraduate and graduate medical education.

This first year medical students used the Story Exchange as an essential part of their early medical journey, building connection and empathy among the cohort. 

Impact:
Moved by the first year experience programming, Ithaca College students organized another exchange, bringing Narrative 4 back to campus to support student facilitators. The facilitators led a story exchange between different student religious groups on campus, supporting more storytelling, discussion, and civic discourse.
