Art Reflection, Noticing Thoughts and Feelings
How can art be a tool that allows us to pause, notice, and reflect?
During this lesson students will observe an art piece. They will sit with that art piece, then jot down any thoughts or feelings they have after spending time with that piece of art. Afterwards they will take time to reflect on the feelings that arose when thinking of that piece of art.
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to process emotions and feelings through an arts exploration and reflection.
Materials
- Reflection questions (see lesson plan)
- Art Pieces (you may use any art piece that you see fit)
- Blank piece of lined paper

Observe
-
- First, introduce students to the goal of the day.
- Say: Today we will be using pieces of art to explore our own thoughts and feelings. In a moment, you will be shown a piece of art. Your job will be to sit with that piece of art for about 3 minutes, reflecting only in your mind.
- Show the piece of art you have chosen to use to the class. *Note: Students can choose their own piece of art and not everyone has to be looking at the same art piece. If you would like students to have a choice in what art piece they will be reflecting with today, give them time to choose a piece before having them sit silently and observe.
