Milling With Open Sentences
How can brief interactions with people in our community change our perception of one another?
During this lesson students will move around a space. When directed to, they will pause and respond to a sentence stem, speaking to the person closest to them. After both partners have shared, they will continue to move around the space, finding a new partner to respond to using a new sentence stem.
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to practice holding brief conversations with multiple people.
Students will practice deep listening when paired with a partner.
Materials
- Bell (or sound of some sort)
- Cleared space to move
Preview Lesson Plan
- Begin by having students walk around the room at their typical pace.
- After 10-15 seconds at this pace, encourage students to move around the space faster, like they are in a hurry. After 10-15 seconds at this pace, direct students to begin walking around the space even faster, as if they were in a rush.
Say: The people around you are in the way but you’re able to navigate around them, feeling the tension in your body as you keep moving, passing each other without looking directly at each other, absorbed in your own thoughts.
