As teachers who continually work to root our practices in culturally relevant pedagogy, it’s our responsibility to help students develop and maintain positive social identities as well as develop a greater appreciation for the diversity that surrounds them. Accessing the structure of the Story Exchange, one way we can accomplish these goals is by sharing a read aloud and then launching an exchange of stories building off important themes within the book. When these books and stories are paired, we create opportunities to celebrate the many aspects of our student’s identities while at the same time acknowledging the richness of diversity found within their classroom and in the world around them. Of course, these pairings of books and stories take some careful deliberation.
