 How does our relationship with our community change our perspective?

During this lesson students will use an excerpt from Jamaica Kincaid’s A Small Place as a model for writing about their community from the perspective of an insider to an outsider of the community.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to use a mentor text to guide a writing piece.

Students will be able to write about their community from multiple perspectives (ie- a personal “insider” perspective and an “outsider” perspective).

Mentor Text: A Small Place

  • Begin by reflecting on the following questions:
    • What happens when people outside your community stop by?
    • What do people think they know from the media that isn’t true or only part of the picture?
    • How is this different from what you know about this place?
