One Voice, Many Voices: An N4 Artists Network Poetry Workshop with Babalwa Tetyana

Free

Date: January 31, 2024

Start time: 07:00 PM EDT

End time: 08:00 PM EDT

Description

We all hold stories. And some people’s valuable narratives go unshared due to the positions they may find themselves in life. In this workshop, we’ll explore the art of writing in another’s voice as a way to effectively elevate stories that are not our own. We will discuss and draw from my own practices and other poets’ work. Participants will have the opportunity to write their own persona poems and share their art with the group.

Babalwa Tetyana – Presenter Bio:

Babalwa Tetyana is a poet born and raised in Joe Slovo Township, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She studied Creative Writing and Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College where she obtained her BA degree. Babalwa started writing poetry in 8th grade and has grown as a poet through reading, writing, and attending Poetry Slams, as well as open mics. She is inspired by contemporary poets such as Donika Kelly, Danez Smith, Thuli Zuma, and many more. Through her writing, Babalwa aims to articulate and beautify the unsayable. She plans to continue using poetry as a tool to discover and educate about the beautiful mess that truth can be.
