This month, to celebrate International Women’s History Month, we’ve asked our staff to nominate some of the amazing women working within the Narrative 4 community, to uplift their work and express our sincere appreciation for their commitment to N4’s core beliefs. These women truly embody compassionate change-making in the world and are doing the work to build support and connection in their communities.

Dr. Courington is an educator at heart. A former K-12 teacher, she currently serves as a full time faculty member at Bellarmine University, as well as a consultant for Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE), facilitating partnerships between underrepresented student populations at Bellarmine and various community and STEM-focused programs. Dr. Courington is a fierce advocate for students and HBCUs; she brings her wealth of research-backed knowledge on trauma-informed care, traumatic racial experiences, and belonging and safe spaces for students of color to all that she does and has exemplified Narrative 4’s Empathy into Action philosophy through her work. As a first generation college student and graduate of Kentucky State University, Dr. Courington has been enthusiastic about using Narrative 4 to serve the people of greater Louisville and we are honored to help her bring this work to fruition.

In conversation with Diane

1. Tell us about the work you do supporting students in maximizing their potential and navigating systemic barriers.

As an educator, I am inspired by the opportunity to help students overcome systemic barriers and achieve their full potential. Through my work, I strive to create a safe and inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and supported. I aim to empower students to reach new heights and accomplish their goals by identifying and addressing the obstacles that may be holding them back. Whether through academic support, social-emotional guidance, or advocacy for systemic change, I am committed to providing every student with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed.

2. Share how you think N4 can help students achieve their goals

N4 empowers students to foster meaningful relationships with their peers, educators, and community members. It guides educators to recognize their students’ human sides and create authentic learning experiences.

3. Is there a local Louisville/regional individual or organization you’d like to shout out?

I want to shout out Bellarmine School of Education, Bellarmine Amgen Biotech Experience, and Louisville Girls Leadership.
